What Is a Prompt?

30 August 2026

The words you type to an AI — and why clearer words get a clearer answer.

Beginner4-minute readNo coding needed

Guide 02 said the instruction you give the AI is called a prompt.

This guide explains that word.

You do not need coding.

What is a prompt?

A prompt is what you type to the AI.

It can be a question.

It can be a job, such as “Make this shorter.”

It can be a short line that starts a chat.

You type. The AI writes back.

The bicycle answer is made up. It only shows the two sides.

Why the words matter

If you are vague, the AI has to guess.

If you are clear, the answer is clearer.

Here are two made-up prompts. They are not from a real chat.

Vague

Tell me about dogs.

Clear

Explain in four short sentences, for a ten-year-old, how a guide dog is trained.

The second one says what to do, how long, and who it is for.

To make a prompt clearer:

  • Say what you want
  • Say who it is for
  • Say how long it should be
  • Say how it should look, such as a list
The AI can only use the words you give it.

What to remember

A prompt is what you type.

The AI writes back.

Clearer words get a clearer answer.

The AI is still guessing the next likely words. Guide 02 covered that. Check anything that matters.
